Do you remember last year series exploring the concepts of serenity and well-being from Scandinavian countries? I found another one, the Norwegian concept of dugnadsånd, which translates to “community spirit,” and emphasizes the power of collective action, cooperation, and selflessness.
What is Dugnadsånd?
Dugnadsånd is rooted in the collective willingness of people to come together for community projects. It’s about neighbors helping neighbors, communities clearing rubbish, or creating playgrounds. This concept is not about grand gestures but modest, everyday actions that strengthen the bonds within a community.
Meik Wiking, the chief executive of the Happiness Research Institute in Copenhagen, highlights that dugnadsånd can make communities stronger, more resilient, and happier. It’s a form of practical solidarity that benefits everyone involved, fostering a sense of belonging and mutual support.
The Benefits of Community Spirit
Research has shown that volunteering and community engagement have tangible benefits for both individuals and communities. A 2023 review of studies on volunteering found consistent evidence supporting its positive effects on general health, wellbeing, and quality of life.
Engaging in community projects can alleviate feelings of despair and foster a sense of purpose. It’s a reminder that we all have something to contribute, and acting on that belief can be deeply fulfilling. Whether it’s picking up litter, helping at a local repair cafe, or supporting environmental initiatives, every small act of service adds up to create a significant impact.
Dugnadsånd in Action
In many ways, dugnadsånd is already at work in our communities. Despite bare-bones budgets and threadbare public services, collective action could ensure that hungry children are fed, environmental issues are highlighted, and refugees are welcomed. These acts of community spirit are not just about filling gaps left by the state but about building stronger, more connected communities.
However, it’s essential to acknowledge the limitations and potential pitfalls. Dugnadsånd should not be an excuse for the state to shirk its responsibilities. Instead, it should complement and enhance the work of public services, ensuring that everyone has access to the support they need.
Preparing for the Future
As we face an uncertain future with potential natural and human-made disasters, dugnadsånd can serve as a form of training. In addition to preparing survival kits, as some EU governments are suggesting, we could also practice collective thinking, put ideas into action, so to be ready to face our vulnerability. By doing so, we can build resilient communities that will be better equipped to cope with any storm.
With dugnadsånd, we can foster a sense of belonging, strengthen our communities, and prepare for the challenges that lie ahead. It’s a reminder that we are all in this together, and together, we can make a difference.

Nepali people are very good at that. They really support each other and help each other. I really enjoy their sense of community and how they all help each others
I have no doubt about that after your post! Thank you!
Together we can make a difference. That is such a hopeful statement of our collective power. Thank you for this inspiring term and approach to living in community!
Thank you Wynne, we need hope more now than ever!
I love this concept! Unfortunately, the culture in the U.S. has always, in my opinion, been over focused on the individual over the community, and nothing illustrates and exacerbates that more than giant jackass we just elected as President. 😡😞
I am afraid that I agree with you, would prefer not though…
