A Simple Spring Interlude

The calendar says spring officially arrived in the Northern Hemisphere on March 19 but, in typical Canadian fashion, it has only really started to feel like spring in the last week.

I love spring. Seeing things come back to life after a long winter is a reminder of the cycle of life and the resilience of nature.

A few days ago, SeekerFive asked for hacks on maintaining continual mindful awareness in daily life. To me, there’s no better way to do that than getting outdoors and immersing ourselves in the beauty of nature.

As I’ve been going about my daily life this past week, signs of spring were everywhere I looked. It’s amazing to me how just a couple of warm sunny days bring everything to life.

Earlier in the week, I observed how the leaves seemed to have popped out on the trees overnight. Trees that were brown and bare a few short days ago are now displaying wonderful shades of green. And the blossoms are proudly displaying their splendour.

Then, as I sat on my deck after work one day, I was delighted to see a variety of birds at the feeder. The blue jays have returned for their spring visit before they venture further north and come back to us in the fall on their way south. The jays were competing for space at the feeder with red-winged blackbirds and goldfinches. The mourning doves and cardinals who stay with us all winter long have to learn to share their space again.

And the ducks are back! This pair returns to our street every year. It won’t be long before we see ducklings swimming on the pond.

On one of our evening walks, we were serenaded by a chorus of frogs at the local pond. What a wonderful sound that was!

And let’s not forget the dandelions. Many people consider these weeds an annoyance, but I love their cheerful yellow colour. They brighten up the grass for a few weeks.

We put in a new deck and patio late last summer. I’m looking forward to spending more time out there in the coming months, soaking up the wonder of nature before winter returns.

    1. It sure is! I often think I’d miss the changing seasons if I lived somewhere tropical.

By the way, do you know you can make cookies of Dandelion and they are very good for cleansing the liver? You can find the recipe online.

    1. Thanks so much! I have not heard of dandelion cookies. They sound interesting. My dad used to tell me that his dad made dandelion wine, and I’ve heard of dandelion salad, too.
