We take our true crime seriously here in the Pacific Northwest. I think that’s because we were home to both best-selling true crime author Ann Rule, and notable serial killer Ted Bundy. In a strange crossing of paths, Ann Rule and Ted Bundy both volunteered at a suicide crisis hotline in Seattle and were friendly.

I’m qualified to weigh in about this because when Ted Bundy was executed, I answered a few phone calls at my college sorority house from reporters wanting photos of Georgann Hawkins. Georgann had belonged to the same sorority I was in 15 years before. She disappeared one night during finals week before summer break. Ted Bundy tried to delay his execution by confessing to Georgann’s abduction and murder.

Also, I used to go to a dog park where Ann Rule’s son, Mike, would often bring Ann Rule’s dog.

And while all of the above is true, it also illustrates some of the comical connections that arise in crime reporting. It’s part of the charm, isn’t it?
