We are progressively losing the ability to concentrate deeply on a single task. Johann Hari’s Stolen Focus delves into the reasons behind our dwindling attention spans and offers a comprehensive look at the twelve deep causes of this crisis. As I reflect on Hari’s insights, I can’t help but see the profound impact these factors have on our daily lives. Based on his research, I think we can address the causes identified by Hari.
The Digital Distraction Dilemma
One of Hari’s most striking points is about the rise of technology and social media. Our smartphones, with their constant notifications and addictive apps, are designed to capture and hold our attention. This relentless digital distraction prevents us from mind-wandering, a state crucial for creativity and problem-solving.
Tip # 1 – disable your notifications or put them on silent mode.
The Myth of Multitasking
Hari’s exploration of multitasking and the “switch cost effect” resonated deeply with me. In our quest to be more productive, we often juggle multiple tasks, believing we can handle them all simultaneously. However, this rapid task-switching degrades the quality of our attention and increases cognitive load.
Tip # 2 – have a look at my previous blog post: Single-Tasking: the Power of Flow State at Work. You will find six techniques that help you stay focused on one task at a time.
The Decline of Deep Reading
Another poignant observation is the collapse of sustained reading. The Internet and digital media have changed our reading habits, making it harder to engage with long-form content. I can witness this now, as I find it challenging to maintain that level of focus, especially when reading on the Internet. With paper books, I can focus much better.
Tip # 3 – Try to read more on paper, in a room where you don’t get distracted (don’t have any digital devices at hand).
The Toll of Exhaustion and Stress
Hari also addresses the rise of physical and mental exhaustion, as well as increased stress and anxiety. Overwork and lack of rest are common culprits that impair our ability to focus.
Tip # 4 – Try meditation and/or mindfulness. Both are very useful for relaxing.
The Importance of Play and Social Connections
The decline of play and social connections is another critical area Hari explores. Modern lifestyles have reduced opportunities for unstructured, creative play, especially for children. Additionally, our reliance on digital communication has diminished the quality of our face-to-face interactions. These changes have profound implications for our ability to focus and engage deeply with tasks.
Tip # 5 – If you have kids, play with them. It’s very important for their development but also for yours, as Hari explains. Meet more often with the people you want to interact with. Leave online meetings only for people living remotely from your area.
Environmental and Nutritional Factors
Hari’s discussion on the impact of pollution and poor nutrition on cognitive function was eye-opening. Environmental factors like air pollution can decrease mental clarity, while poor diets negatively affect brain health. These insights highlight the importance of a holistic approach to maintaining focus, one that includes a healthy environment and proper nutrition.
Tip # 6 – You can choose your mobility and your nutrition. Try to commute by public transport and eat healthy food.
A Culture of Speed
Finally, Hari addresses the rise of a culture of speed, where societal pressure to always be busy and productive undermines our ability to focus. This constant rush leaves little room for deep thinking and reflection.
Tip # 7 – Slow down and prioritize deep, meaningful activities over constant busyness to foster sustained attention and reflection.
Conclusion
Johann Hari’s Stolen Focus offers a compelling examination of the factors contributing to our attention crisis. By understanding these causes, we can take steps to reclaim our focus and create environments that support deep thinking. Reflecting on Hari’s insights, I believe we can make conscious changes in our lives, from reducing digital distractions to prioritizing rest and meaningful social connections. In doing so, I hope we will rediscover the lost art of sustained focus and enrich our daily experiences.

Thanks for providing Cole’s Notes for Hari’s observations. Yes, we are definitely addicted to our all to convenient handheld devices. On my morning walk I’ll pass by neighbours interacting with their device. I watch as there seems to be a good level of concentration on their device but not much around their physical surroundings.
I agree and walking without being aware of the surroundings could be also dangerous! Thank you for commenting!
I must admit, I selected the text and had my phone read it to me via accessibility features while I put dishes away. 🤷♂️
OMG! Try do do one thing at a time! Thank you for sharing Sudrakarma!
Excellent points. I have campaigned for the benefits of boredom for a long time.
Boredom is a source of creativity!
Great tips as always Cristiana! I have noticed my attention span slipping especially when reading online.)
Thank you Todd, I agree with you about reading online.
How interesting the tie between environmental and nutritional factors. Thanks for some great info and tips!
Thank you Wynne for commenting!
Stolen Focus is a great book, thanks for writing a post about it Cristiana!🙏 One thing I remember from the book that really struck me, was that many of the people behind these attention-addicting apps heavily restrict their own children’s engagement with those apps/devices. I thought that was very telling.
Thank you for reminding it to me, that’s crazy, isn’t it?
Yes, absolutely!
