Turning Differences into Equality in Society

“La nature crée des différences; la société en fait des inégalités” Tahar Ben Jelloun

You agree with me that every person is unique, right? So, why do our differences often feel like barriers rather than bridges? Tahar Ben Jelloun, a renowned Moroccan-French writer, captures this paradox with his powerful quote: “Nature creates differences; society creates inequalities.” Nature offers us diversity, but society transforms it into hierarchy and division. This insight invites us to reflect on the nature of diversity, and how we can reshape our world to value differences rather than penalize them.

The Beauty of Diversity vs. the Burden of Inequality

When we look around, we see an array of identities—from gender, and physical ability to socioeconomic backgrounds and individual personalities. Nature thrives on this diversity, creating resilient ecosystems through variety. Just like a forest where every tree, plant, and animal has a role, humanity too is enriched by our unique qualities.

However, society has often imposed arbitrary values on these differences, creating divisions and biases that lead to inequality. Imagine how much potential is lost when access to quality education, fair employment, or healthcare is determined by societal biases instead of individual merit.

Why Acknowledging Inequality Is Crucial

Understanding inequality helps us see the scope of challenges that arise when differences are penalized rather than celebrated. Awareness is the first step toward transforming society. Imagine if our schools, workplaces, and communities treated differences as valuable contributions. Embracing diversity allows us to create spaces that prioritize inclusion, fairness, and opportunity.

On a personal level, this shift in mindset can inspire acts of empathy and support for those who face discrimination. By challenging stereotypes and supporting inclusive policies, we contribute to reshaping society’s approach to diversity.

Taking Action: Redefining the Value of Differences

Transforming the way society views diversity begins with us. By nurturing empathy over judgment, understanding over exclusion, and equality over hierarchy, we can dismantle the constructs that transform natural differences into social obstacles. This mindset shift is vital for creating a more inclusive world.

Tahar Ben Jelloun’s words remind us that while diversity is natural, inequality is not. Throughout our personal and professional lives, let’s strive to treat differences as sources of collective strength. Accepting diversity in all its forms is one of the most powerful ways to build a fairer, more compassionate society.

Pledge for Equality and Fairness in Society

The elections in the US are approaching. I would like to invite my dear American friends to carefully consider each candidate’s commitment to equality, fairness, and the well-being of all individuals.

Consider voting for someone with these values in mind, recognizing that our society depends on the advancement of opportunity for all.

  1. We’re all individually unique yet fundamentally identical. The tyranny of some in our societies is a prime example of what God told us not to do. Don’t ever act as a god. Isaiah 48:11-12 says, “For My own sake, for My own sake, I will act; for how can My name be profaned? And My glory I will not give to another. Listen to Me, O Jacob, even Israel whom I have called; I am He, I am the first, I am also the last”.

  2. Very thought provoking, Cristiana. So much of the inequality in our world comes from the need for power, and the refusal to accept that anything different could be good or even worthy. It’s very sad. I’ll be watching the U.S. election with much interest and trepidation!
