Summer at Work: Changing Habits During the Holidays

While many professionals take a well-deserved break during the summer, others remain at work, discovering that this season offers a unique opportunity to change their habits. As colleagues head off on vacation, the office—or home office—takes on a different rhythm. The usually fast-paced environment slows down, requests dwindle, and the atmosphere becomes more relaxed. Flexible hours and the option to telework at my workplace have become a rule after Covid, but for others, it might not be the case and they may become more common during the summer, allowing them to work in ways they may not have considered before.

But does summer truly allow us to work differently? And if so, what benefits can we reap from this seasonal shift?

The Calm of Summer: A Chance to Reset

Summer in the workplace is unlike any other time of year. With fewer people in the office, meetings are less frequent, emails are not as overwhelming, and the general pace slows down. This quiet period provides an ideal environment to reflect on one’s work habits. Without the usual pressure to respond to constant demands, we can focus on tasks that require deep concentration and creativity—projects that might otherwise be sidelined during busier times.

This slower pace also opens up the possibility of experimenting with new work patterns. Flexible hours become more feasible when there are fewer people to coordinate with. These changes allow us to find a work-life balance that suits us better, whether it means starting the day earlier to enjoy a long afternoon or working from a location that inspires us, like a sunny terrace or a quiet park.

The Power of Flexible Hours and Teleworking

One of the most significant advantages of summer work is the flexibility it often brings. With fewer deadlines and a reduced workload, we have the freedom to structure our day. Some may find that they work best in the early morning when the air is cool and the world is quiet. Others might prefer to take advantage of the long daylight hours, breaking up their day with extended breaks to recharge and return to work with renewed focus.

Teleworking, which has become increasingly common, offers another layer of flexibility. It allows us to escape the confines of the office and work in environments that foster creativity and well-being. Whether it’s working from a café or from home with the windows open, the change of scenery can do wonders for one’s mental state, making work feel less like a chore and more like a fulfilling activity.

The Benefits of a Relaxed Atmosphere

A more relaxed atmosphere can lead to significant benefits, both personally and professionally. Without the usual distractions and pressures, we can delve into tasks that require deep thought and sustained attention. Research and development, strategic planning, and creative brainstorming are all activities that can flourish in the quiet of summer.

Moreover, this time can be used for professional growth. With the typical daily grind on hold, we have the bandwidth to learn new skills, explore innovative tools, or even take on side projects that can enhance our careers. The slower pace allows for reflection on long-term goals and the opportunity to set new intentions for the months ahead.

From a well-being perspective, the summer work environment can reduce stress and burnout. The ability to work flexibly, combined with a more laid-back atmosphere, helps us feel more in control of our time and workload. This, in turn, can lead to increased job satisfaction and a greater sense of accomplishment.

Does Summer Really Allow Us to Work Differently?

The answer is a resounding yes. Summer is not just a time for vacations; it’s also a time for those who stay behind to reinvent their work habits. The season’s unique blend of calm, flexibility, and creativity provides a perfect backdrop for professionals to work differently, more effectively, and with greater satisfaction. We can make lasting changes to our work habits that extend well beyond the season. Whether it’s adopting a more flexible schedule, integrating teleworking into our routine, or simply enjoying the quieter atmosphere, the benefits of summer work can have a profound impact on both personal well-being and professional success.

So, if you find yourself at work this summer while others are on holiday, don’t view it as a missed opportunity for relaxation. Instead, see it as a chance to reset, refocus, and refine how you work. Summer might just be the perfect time to discover a new way of working—one that brings lasting benefits long after the season has passed.

  1. While I love the holidays that come with being an academic I do sometimes wish I could work during the holidays exactly for the reasons you outline. There are fewer distractions and demands on my time. With everyone working towards the same finish date, the last few weeks are stressful. I ended up working the first week of my holidays, and you’re right … its easier to focus on big tasks when everyone else has gone. Unfortunately I can’t control when I have my holidays, but if I could, it would be when others are at work so I have the tranquility

    1. Oh yes Brenda I understand totally your point of view. I remember when my child was a little boy and we were obliged to take holidays during school closures. And now my younger colleagues do the same and I stay happily at home.

  2. I love the slow pace of summer and actually wrote a post on my Summer of Rest this year! Great info 🙂
