The Healing Benefits of Reflexology

On Friday, I went for a reflexology treatment for the first time. I first learned about this natural healing art when a friend and colleague certified as a Reflexologist and opened her own practice after she retired from her primary career. What is reflexology?

Reflexology is a natural therapeutic healing art that activates through touch. It was first recorded as far back as ancient Egyptian times.

Reflexology is based on the premise that there are reflexes in the foot that map to other parts of the body. The inside of the foot represents the spine. The outside represents the shoulders, arms, legs and back. A series of techniques applies pressure to activate healing in various parts of the body.

Like many holistic healing therapies, scientific research to validate the effectiveness of reflexology is limited. What are the benefits of reflexology?

In addition to being a relaxing and enjoyable experience, reflexology offers several health benefits. The National Library of Medicine reports reflexology can:

  • Reduce pain by stimulating the body to release pain-relieving chemicals.
  • Help maintain physical flexibility and athleticism.
  • Prevent disease and promote recovery from physical injury.
  • Effectively treat strokes, insomnia, asthma, diabetes, premenstrual syndrome, dementia, cancers, multiple sclerosis, and other health concerns.
  • Trigger the release of endorphins and enkephalins, which help relieve pain and promote mental energy and wellbeing.

What to expect at a first visit to a reflexologist?

The appointment starts with the completion and review of a health history form. The client provides details of any current discomfort or pain.

Then, the client is seated comfortably on the treatment bed. During the treatment, the reflexologist uses their thumb to walk up and down the feet, pressing in and up to the reflex points. The reflexologist also brushes with the fingers and hand to push out any fluid in the tissues.  Gentle pressure is sufficient.

During the initial session, the reflexologist records observations on a map of the foot. They discuss any findings with the client after the session.

The colour and texture of the feet can tell the reflexologist a lot. For example, cold feet or feet with a blue tinge are signs of poor circulation. White feet are signs of fatigue or exhaustion.

Unlike a massage appointment, the client remains fully clothed during the treatment. It’s important to dress comfortably for a reflexology appointment. As the treatment goes up to the knees, the client needs to be able to roll up their pant legs. 

How did I enjoy my reflexology session?

The experience was wonderful and so much more relaxing than I expected. During her initial assessment, the reflexologist identified tightness in my upper back, neck and shoulders. At the end of the treatment, she focused attention on those areas. I was surprised that applying pressure to my feet helped relieve aches and pains in other parts of my body.

I left the treatment feeling relaxed and refreshed. I had a wonderful sleep that night and still felt terrific the next day.

    1. I totally agree. I went for a massage once years ago and never went back because it just felt weird to me. Reflexology was a totally different story. I loved it and will definitely do it again.
