I Am Becoming

Itโ€™s a mantra I use often. As a complete thought on its own, it makes me feel like I am improving in every way.  It helps me focus and stay positive.

If I extend it a bit, it helps me to focus specifically on what Iโ€™m trying to do. Itโ€™s also a good way for me to take my own emotional and mental temperature; to see where my head is. If I find myself becoming something undesirable, I change the thought to something better and set my focus there.

I like becoming. Becoming is much more enjoyable than the next stage, which is maintaining. Maintaining is work just to stay where you are and not deteriorate. Becoming is better. Becoming mixes that work with adventure, progress, growth, learning, and excitement. No matter where I am, I strive to be- becoming.

We are all becoming.

But what are we becoming?

Hereโ€™s where I am today:

I am becoming more fit, healthy and well.

I am becoming a marathon runner.

I am becoming a better musician.

I am becoming a better writer.

I am becoming more comfortable with aging.

I am becoming more attuned to the needs of others.

I am becoming more self-aware.

I am becoming a better instrument for good in the world.

I am becoming a better parent.

I am becoming more self-knowledgeable.

I am becoming more knowledgeable about the world.

I am becoming better at prioritizing whatโ€™s important.

I am becoming…

I am becoming…

I am becoming…

  1. Thank you, Todd. I could actually feel myself becoming as I read your words. Iโ€™ve always thought of it as a way offering myself and others grace, but I love the specifics as to what we are becoming. It hit home (my heart). โค๏ธ

  2. I love this — so positive, affirming and proactive. I might adopt parts! And I agree with Deb’s comment…hits the heart in the best way! ๐Ÿ’•

  3. Love this, Todd. It really aligns well with my theme of โ€œreinventionโ€ for 2024. I, too, am becoming.

    1. I find that Iโ€™m not very good at maintaining unless I set my goals on some type of forward motion or improvement. Thanks Cristiana!

  4. I love the art of intention that you’ve captured with the word and your list. We are all becoming something…what a good idea to think about what we want to be! Thanks, Todd!

      1. Hoo-wee, you didn’t pick an easy one! My wind instrument was the flute, and all those tractor tire fingerings of yours used to make me dizzy. And that’s before transposition! ๐Ÿ˜ฑ

      2. ๐Ÿ˜ Whenever I tried the flute, I struggled- usually ended up feeling dizzy and my tone was terrible. Plus thatโ€™s a lot of buttons to deal with! ๐Ÿ˜…

      3. A professional once told me that the flute, with its split air stream and lack of direct embouchure/instrument contact, requires more air to sound than any other except the tuba; and that, unlike the famously hard-to-tune oboes and french horns, does not stay in tune for longer than it is played, requiring subtle in-play retunings after every resting phrase.

They look and sound so sweet, but they’re beasts just the same! ๐Ÿคฃ

      4. Wow โ€“ that makes sense because the other instrument that I nearly passed out while trying to play wasโ€ฆโ€ฆ. The Tuba ๐Ÿ˜‚
Yeah, those woodwinds are pretty, but they are a handful!
