In a few days, the citizens of the United States will be celebrating Thanksgiving, a holiday that encourages people to embrace optimism while taking stock. So, with that in mind, what are you thankful for?
Happy Thanksgiving, all!

To be alive and lively is a biggest gift one can have so happy to be thankful for it.
Hi. I just ran across a quote by Joseph Pilates, founder of the Pilates system of physical fitness. He said, “Physical fitness is the first requisite of happiness.” Lots of truth there. And it’s exercise, good eating, and spiritual wellness that keeps us “lively,” right? Thanks for your comment and I wish you peace and wellness and continued liveliness.
Everything! In retrospect, I’ve lived long enough to witness that “… all things work together for good …” given faith and time.
All His best for a Happy Thanksgiving together with your family and friends.
Like you, I’m thankful for so many things that it’s impossible to list them all out here. Things do sort of tend to work themselves out, one way or another, don’t they? We spend too much time and energy fretting when we really need to understand that “all things work together for good.” Thanks, Fred D, for sharing such wisdom. I wish you and yours a lovely holiday.
I’m thankful that my list of things that I’m thankful for gets longer every day because I’ve known times when it got shorter every day. I’m thankful for platforms such as this one that prompt us to write gratitude down because it seems to solidify as a result. I’m thankful for thoughtful people who ask questions like what are we thankful for because gratitude shared is more enjoyable. Thanks for getting us into the right frame of mind for Thanksgiving, Troy!
What are you grateful for?
Hi, Wynne Leon. My response to my question isn’t going to be near as cool and interesting as your answer was. I guess I’d say that–sort of like I said to Fred D–that I’ve got so much to be thankful for. I’m thankful that I was raised by good people who saw the value in getting an education and steered in me in the right direction as I was growing up. I’m thankful that I’ve taken chances in my life and done some really interesting things and that I still have the desire to learn, explore, and grow. I’m glad I’m surrounded by people who love and like me and that I love and like. Wow! The more I think about how my life has gone, the more things I have to be thankful for. (It’s sort of funny that I often think of myself as this sort of philosophical brooder, as someone who is somewhat pessimistic, but the truth be told, I’m really deeply and profoundly optimistic.)
By the way, Wynne, I’m also thankful that you joined our writing team here at PO. I have been impressed with your storytelling skills and the thoughtfulness of your writing. Keep it up! We love your stuff.
That’s a great list to be thankful for. The education piece and the courage to take chances – wow, that’s big stuff. The loving AND liking – what a blessing. But I’m not surprised that you are deeply and profoundly optimistic. Everything about this PO platform screams that as does your writing.
I can’t thank you enough for asking me to join PO. It is a true, true honor to be part of this team. Thank you for your kind words. Sending my best wishes to you and yours for a great Thanksgiving!
I’m thankful for my family and my animals, because they’re precious to me. I’m also thankful for my house because we were homeless once, for 2 1/2 months. And I’m thankful for that experience, because I can relate to people who are down and out. Not every homeless person is responsible for the situation they’re in; sometimes things are beyond our control. I’m thankful that I can read and think and be challenged. I’m thankful I’m happy, because I know what depression is like. I’m thankful I’m still married and I don’t have a broken family, because my husband and I had a very rocky beginning, middle, and almost end…but I stayed. And things are getting better every day.
Thank you so much, Kristina, for sharing your story. Like you, I’ve gone through periods of extreme poverty and once spent about three months as a squatter. And I’ve faced similar problems to some of those you mentioned. I’ve been through divorces and hardships of nearly everyone sort. But don’t you think we grew because of those challenges? You mentioned empathy in your piece. Suffering helps a person look at those who suffer with a heart full of understanding and compassion. Kristina, I wish you and yours a great holiday, and I’ve been inspired by your comment.
I am thankful for being in my religion, getting good education, happy family and affordable comfort.
Hi, Zainab. Are you Muslim? If so, “Salaam alakum.” It sounds like you’ve got plenty of wonderful things to be thankful for. I truly appreciate your comment.
Hi Sir
Yes I am a muslim. Walaikum salam. I feel honoured as you have acknowledged my religion. I feel proud of you sir.
Yes I find gratefullness in everything. touchwood.
Thank you for the response.
If I were to summarize… I am thankful for existing. Without existence, none of the subordinate things to be thankful for would exist either. Like the sleeping baby in my other arm.
