  1. For the larger majority of students, whether at school or higher education, exams certainley impact mental health. No doubt. People who have attended university know that anxiety, sometimes, extreme forms of anxiety, depression, a-motivation syndrom, burn-out etc. are all there.

    However it also depends on the individual. Many people have great coping mechanisms to deal with negative mental health during exams. For example, I’m a firm believer that preparation is the single best way to combat anxiety and all other symptoms to keep them to a minimum level.

    1. Yes, i believe it certainly effects the mental health. But It depends on the Student’s strength that how he handle this…..

      When I was in school, I was kind of a bookworm……I always thanks to God, who have given me a wonderful capability to catch the things so quickly………πŸ˜‰…
      I would only do self study, not any tuition and plan my syllabus according to the time left in exams….So I had never ever been affected too much by exams… πŸ˜‰πŸ˜‰..

  2. I think it’s all down to the person. It’s a matter of stress and anxiety for me. People handle stress differently and exams can be a major stressful event. I personally developed a temporary anxiety problem with my exams because of my inability to cope with stress, but soem of my friends were smooth and calm during theres. It’s because of the pressures and reliance on having exams be so important, even though a good 90% of what we learn in schools is a waste.

  3. I have always been prone to anxiety issues since my school days. So exams were stressful since then. But I learnt to use the anxiety well. I learnt to perform under extreme pressure. And that helped in there later stages of my life too. But it does get stressful nonetheless. And we all know that stress can play havoc with our mental health!

      A little stress is just natural, It temporarily puts us down for a little time…..It’s Ok….

  4. Hey! My thoughts – Exams test memory more than analysis, creativity, or real understanding. Coursework is a much better assessment of a candidate. My own college professor admitted that exams don’t teach/allow for you to think freely. Exams teach you how to take tests, they do not help us to become free thinkers, and to problem solve on our own. Personally, Exams always exacerbate my anxiety, which is horrible for my mental health. Still I always give my best effort when faced with a challenge. Do you think exams are an accurate assessment of intelligence?

    1. I agree! As for testing intelligence, the goal of a test or an exam is to check for mastery of a subject. Typically by memory based questions. Sometimes you might find questions that make the test taker use a set of skills to answer questions, Like a math problem. As for testing intelligence, I don’t think there is one accurate way to do that.

  5. It depends in large part on the result of the exam, I suspect. A great exam or test score always made me feel very good about what I had accomplished. An unsatisfactory score made me try harder. From a very layman’s perspective…exams put hair on your chest. πŸ™‚

  6. As other people have said, I think exams are more about memorising information, rather than learning what it means. People with depression, anxiety, etc find it very difficult to memorize things, especially when they’re under stress, and so I don’t think exams are helpful for many people.

      Exams are just about memorization….

  7. What I feel is it’s not the exams which is injurious to health, rather it’s the way they are perceived. If a student studies with a motivation other than passing exam, the exam shall be a piece of cake. There won’t be any immediate pressure on the student just before exam. But, if a student studies just for exams, or just a night or a day before exams, the nervousness, stress and other relevant terms become visible.

      Because ‘Exams’ are treated as something dangerous from the very beginning by a Student…….That’s he’s afraid of exams all his life….
      But Exams are not any dangerous thing, neither they’re of any use except checking the memorising capacity of an Individual….

  8. It depends so much on the exam. Say – going for your driver’s license. Yes, it’s stressful, but if you think driving isn’t going to be stressful, then perhaps you shouldn’t be driving. I think there’s a certain benefit to the instructor, to create exams that show where the student or the class needs more direction – and that’s likely stressful too. On the whole – I’m going with a big, fat yes – but I’m also going to say that there isn’t much going on in life that isn’t stressing.

      But for some (specially students), the exams nd marks are much depressing…..As the atmosphere around them make believe that getting A+ in the exams is necessary to survive…so, If somehow they miss that, they tracked in the burn outs….

  9. Not in the long run, but they do not ensure long term retention nor test the ability to apply knowledge either (with a few exceptions such as law school style exams). I went to an undergraduate honors college that discouraged testing and encouraged the use of writing papers instead. I retained a great deal of information from those years. Prior to attending that college, I went to a standard community college in which they administered typical tests. I cannot recall nearly as much information from those years. Law school was a different beast entirely!

      But that is thing that makes the difference….
      So, how would they conduct the exams exactly..(in honors college) ??..
      Can you explain more ? I’m interested to know…..

      1. For example, they would ask unanswered questions in psych class for you to propose a hypothesis and support it with existing research. So, you had to both be familiar with the research and be able to apply the principals. Then, they would ask how to design a study to test your hypothesis.

  10. Perhaps. While exams demonstrate a person’s level of knowledge, it lacks the ability to present what a person truly knows. Many people can take the same class, study the same book, but yet, some cannot pass the exam with a high score. Not everyone learns the same way as the exams are presented as being the exact same. After graduating high school, it was then that I was diagnosed with dyslexia. I had been passed through the elementary/high school system because my teachers didn’t not know what to think of my learning style. I processed things differently than others. I did have a teacher in high school who noticed that I could not pass a standardized exam. Instead, she gave me a different type of exam to demonstrate what I did know from her teachings. I can retain frivolous and trivial details of many things but when it comes to factual things, my brain squashes the knowledge. The wrong kind of exam can be injurious to a person’s mental health. It can cause undue stress and an unusually high level of anxiety not otherwise found. It does not matter how much preparation is done. I’ve had times where I have had to study intensely to pass a favorite subject yet fail it and times where I did no studying at all, only to pass the exam with 100%. Everyone has a different learning style and ability. Not everyone handles an exam the same.

    1. You got the exactly true aspect of this issue……
      We’re different from each other so our styles to do anything…….
      Someone get the knowledge beyond that subject while the other can’t even understand that……But It doesn’t mean that the first one is more Intelligent than the latter……
      So sorry to hear that you suffered from dyslexia….I can feel it’s so difficult having this problem to learn….But I also admire your efforts and I must say that you have so wise thoughts regarding the exams……

  11. Depends on the importance we give to that exam. If we think is vital for our future development, we’ll go all in on it and we’ll probably do whatever we can to have the best result we can which is not useful in long term if all that exam implies is memorizing stuff. If it sparks our creativity, it can be helpful.
