On the occasion of the opening of the 2024 Summer Olympics, I would like to share with you the interest I have always had in how some high-level athletes keep themselves motivated when it takes months to achieve a better result. I read their books, listened to podcasts, and watched video interviews. Initially, I was impressed by their strength, ability to perform so well, and creativity. Over time, I’ve come to understand the power of their mindset. The answer lies in one sentence: they trust the process. This means among other things, that they rely on their training routine, the quality of their sleep, and the strength of their nutrition.
After a tough training session, instead of dwelling on it, they draw inspiration from it and train their mind. They trust the process and don’t focus on the short-term results.
This reminds me that progress is not linear. We are not machines, and we make a little progress every day. And we have to accept that by training regularly there will be days with progress and others without.
Christopher Sommer, the former coach of the US national gymnastics team, speaks eloquently in this video with Tim Ferriss.
Here are my takeaways from the video:
- The Importance of Foundation: Building a strong foundation in any skill is crucial before attempting advanced techniques. This applies to gymnastics, as well as any other discipline.
- Consistency Over Intensity: Regular, consistent practice is more beneficial than occasional, intense workouts. This approach leads to sustainable progress and reduces the risk of injury (also in a metaphoric sense).
- Quality Over Quantity: Focusing on the quality of each movement and exercise is more important than the number of repetitions.
- Mindset Matters: A positive and resilient mindset is essential for overcoming challenges and setbacks in training.
- Progress is Non-linear: Improvement doesn’t always follow a straight line. There will be peaks, plateaus, and sometimes dips in performance, which are all part of the learning process.
Sommer’s views transcend disciplines. Whether you’re an artist, a student, a professional, or someone working towards a personal goal, the principle remains the same. Trust the process. Embrace the journey. Celebrate the small victories and understand that setbacks are part of the path to success.
Are there areas where you’ve been focusing too much on the outcome and not enough on the process? How can you shift your mindset to appreciate the steps you’re taking toward your goals? Share your thoughts and experiences, and let’s inspire each other to trust the process of growth and learning.
